OUR MISSION AND PURPOSE:

Open Hands provides essential services to help frail elderly, disabled and economically disadvantaged members of our community to live with dignity and independence. In the face of an always-growing list of people who require the services we provide, our goal is to reach and help as many of these people as we can – starting with those who have no other foreseeable way to obtain the wheelchair ramp, wheelchair-friendly home modifications, or professional non-residential caregiving services they need.

HISTORY, PROGRAMS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

Since its founding in 1977, Open Hands has fulfilled this mission by delivering a combination of unique, critically needed programs and services to northern New Mexicans.

Our Adult Care Service program now provides professional daytime care in a safe, nurturing environment, for people in our community who suffer from Alzheimer's or other types of dementia.
Our Community Outreach Services program includes a Home Safety component, through which we design and build custom, ADS-compliant wheelchair ramps at people's homes, and also install safety features from grab bars in the bathroom to walker-safe stairs and handrails to professional TubCuts™ which enable people with disabilities to remain mobile, independent, and safe in their
own homes, as well as a Medical Equipment Loan Bank.

From working with 26 clients in its first year, the organization has grown to the most
comprehensive program in northern New Mexico which now serves nearly 10,000 clients
per year in Santa Fe and throughout the state. The essential services provided help our
clients to live in their own homes, or with family, for as long as possible, helping them
to avoid the emotional and financial consequences of premature institutionalization.
These programs have had a positive impact on our community's social well being.

All of our services are available through private pay for those who can afford it,
or on a sliding scale which includes "no charge" for those who truly cannot afford
to contribute, to the extent that we are able to help.
